Annie soon discovers things that don't change, or in her case––a stationary wolf statue, can never truly be free…but if she’ll open her heart, god can use her situation, her brokenness and pain for connecting unreachable hearts—that have lost their way, and He can use her scars to open those who condemn and accuse her, and heal their wounds so they can love again, too—maybe even her.

Within days, not only is a wolf found shot, and another two found in traps, but Annie hears men quarreling, gun shots, and later finds a man dead with a bullet in his head, and another in his shoulder.

While timing may be everything, it's absolutely not Othaniel's time or place, or so it seems when he arrives, by personal invitation, he thinks, to finally meet his birth mother. On his long bus ride he meets a girl who seems to guide him to the answers he needs most, and discovers what she knew far ahead of him--could only have been a message from above.

Love is in the air and wedding bells are ringing...and it looks like the year will end without a hitch...until a wayward cougar feeding on winter kill in an open slough, hears sleigh bells, springs up startling the horse team pulling the sleigh...

Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

In the long shadows of a late afternoon, but maybe they just seemed longer with a killer at large, darker in some way like evil was lurking behind one of thousands of hoar-frosted trees in the river valley; besides it was only the first Monday after Christmas break, the second Monday since the Winter Solstice, and everyone knew that was the longest day of the year. The sun was low in the sky, right on schedule, setting right on time, not a minute earlier in the afternoon for this time of year. The sun shone, casting golden rays of light onto the Imperial School Rider bus as it began pulling to a grinding halt at the bottom of Fisher Hill, the first of eight stops in the rural blufflands of Whitewater Falls, Minnesota, and as the driver pulled to a stop on the loose gravel, he noticed something dark and swift, something that raced through nearby trees, causing a blanket of frost to fall from the branches and into the wind.

While the bus driver, Mr. Lucian pulled the door open of their bus door, he turned his sights to the woods, trying to focus on what movement he saw. He tried to ignore the eerie feeling that bit at his gut, he tried to believe it was just a deer, all while his nagging inner critic reminded him he was too blind to see that far, reminding him he should have listened before and gone in for his eye exam, bought the new glasses he knew they would prescribe, ones he knew he needed-– but putting his lack of vision aside, it caused him to examine the deepening angst growing inside him: a dark feeling that warned him to keep driving, not to let anyone off the bus, especially the two girls heading up the bus aisle now.

Besides, his sixth sense would have warned him, in some other way if something were wrong, something would have stood out and jolted him into reality. If something were wrong he would have just known, his gut feelings were never wrong, he would have felt that twinge, and known for sure and when that happened he would have slammed that bus door shut and kept driving. For the rest of his life he would ponder why that feeling never came, what blocked it, how, like his eyes, his better judgment, it could fail him?

When Sheriff Kraig asked him later what he thought he saw, that's exactly what he would tell you he would have done, if he had a second chance. Instead, he gave another cursory glance to the heavy woods, and with only a slight tremor in his voice, reminded Alley and Amelia "Hammie" Cristin of their parents' instructions to head straight home. What happened next, would be one of his biggest regrets of his life, not listening to that little voice inside, the one that said, "Don't let those girls off the bus."

The girls nodded, gathering their backpacks, putting their mittens on while asking their friend Sarah Hargrove, Alley's best friend and their closest neighbor, to keep to the plan, with news of a killer at large, and join them in their walk home. The sisters stepped off their school bus into the breezy January air, and looked around for Badillo, their red bone coon hound, who seemed to have learned how to tell time, for he was always waiting at the bus stop when the bus arrived, like he knew when to leave their century farm and travel down the hill, that or he could hear the rumble and clanking as it traveled through the valley. Except today, where ever he was, he wasn't waiting at his usual spot.

Alley motioned to Sarah, who like Old Red, their stubborn mule refusing to leave its barn stall, burrowed down in her seat. Not even a big frown or wiping her eyes with her mittens, while pretending to wipe tears was convincing enough to make Sarah to leave her seat. Sarah, shook her head at Alley, refusing to budge, shooing them off, waving good-bye, and began cozying up to her newest boyfriend, Billy Eckermen, the high school freshman who was taking her to his house to work on their history project. As bus number 58 pulled away, Billy looked back at the Alley with a smug grin, like he won some kind of mind challenge by keeping Sarah by his side, leaving Alley wondering what it was about Sarah that made all the boys at Forage High School crazy about her.

What bothered her more was why Sarah would even think about dating Billy Eckermen––had she forgotten what Mr. Benson taught them, that history often repeats itself, had she forgotten or did she choose to ignore the horrible rumors about Billy, his family, and the stories that still circulated about them and their century old house?

Alley tightened her boot laces, strapped her backpack on as Badillo ran out from the shadows of the trees and to them, and then raced Hammie up Fisher Hill, with Badillo chasing behind, and the three ran towards their home leaving tan footprints every place their feet and Badillos' paws met gravel in the fresh dusting of snow, and went missing.

This 70,000 word (nanowrimo goal), adult psychological thriller is filled with as many unending twists and turns as there are hidden skeletons. As Sheriff Kraig digs through broken dreams, buried trinkets, clues that help him in his search for two young girls; he discovers that not only does every small town have it's beauties and secrets; he learns that one never really knows their neighbors, until he finds out where they bury them.
